The Young Auditorium serves as a presenting organization for the performing arts and as an educational and cultural center enriching the lives of the UW-Whitewater campus and regional communities. The auditorium presents world class entertainment from Broadway’s best musicals to contemporary dance, World Music, theatre/drama performances, national and international music acts, comedy shows, seasonal specials, and dozens of family-friendly events each year. The auditorium is located on the UW-Whitewater campus adjacent to the Greenhill Center of the Arts building, but is a public performance venue.
In addition to the regular public performance season, Young Auditorium presents the Horizons School Matinee Series, which is an educational outreach program bringing visiting national and international touring performing arts companies to the local stage for area K-12 schools to attend. The mission of the Horizons program is to support the curriculum of schools by providing culturally diverse programs for students, and an opportunity for teachers to integrate the arts into their students’ education. Arts4All, a subsidy program, is available for schools with an economically disadvantaged population, to help ensure that all students have an equal opportunity to benefit from the arts as part of their education.
The theatre is a state-of-the-art venue, with 1,300 seats and a 400 square foot stage. Through lighting options and architectural arrangements, the auditorium can also achieve the feeling of warmth and comfort of a much smaller space. The auditorium is also utilized for various music department and continuing education-sponsored activities, and is available to student and community groups that wish to present their own events.
Young Auditorium also houses the Fern Young Terrace and Kachel Center. Both rooms can be equipped for meetings, rehearsals, presentations, receptions, or special events – all with catering as an option. The rooms can also function as support spaces to complement auditorium events. The Kachel Center can accommodate up to 150 people, and the Terrace, 56.
Additionally, the UW-Whitewater Cultural Affairs Committee provides opportunities for student committee members to gain educational experiences in arts administration, and is dedicated to assisting in the selection of cultural, diverse, educational, and entertaining events at Young Auditorium for students and community members.
Grants, memberships, sponsorships, partnerships, and individual ticket sales help support the mission of the Young Auditorium and all of its programming, which is centered upon sharing the arts with everyone and broadening horizons.
