The Occupational and Environmental Safety & Health (OESH) department prepares students for careers dedicated to protecting workers, the public and the environment from hazards associated with rapid technological and scientific advancements. OESH professionals focus on the interaction between people and various physical, chemical, biological and psychological factors affecting workplace safety, health, and productivity.
The program covers essential topics such as accident prevention, ergonomics, construction safety, protection and prevention, and regulatory compliance. Students develop critical skills to assess and mitigate workplace hazards with hands-on worksite activities.
Programs:
- Bachelor of Science in Occupational Safety
- This undergraduate program prepares students with a foundation in Occupational and Environmental Safety and Health. Focusing on the importance of preserving the natural environment and protecting those within the work environment.
- Industrial Hygiene Minor
- A flexible option for non-Occupational Safety majors to have sufficient knowledge in industrial hygiene to either meet most admission requirements for a master's program in industrial hygiene or be hired for an entry-level industrial hygiene position. This minor is available to both Bachelor of Business Administration majors and those majors outside the College of Business Administration.
- Occupational Safety Minor
- A flexible option for non-Occupational Safety majors seeking foundation knowledge in Occupational and Environmental Safety and Health to complement their primary field of study. This minor is available to both Bachelor of Business Administration majors and those majors outside the College of Business Administration. It is not available to Bachelor of Science Occupational Safety majors.
- Construction Safety Management Certificate
- This option provides students with fundamental and advanced construction safety knowledge, an understanding of drugs and alcohol, and essential interpersonal skills
Major Requirements:
- An Occupational Safety Major is required to complete a full-semester internship.
- An Occupational Safety Major must maintain a minimum 2.50 GPA in the major to qualify for the required internship and graduation.
Additional Opportunities and Highlights:
- The Bachelor of Science in Occupational Safety is accredited by the Applied and Natural Science Accreditation Commission of ABET. This accreditation helps ensure that students enter their chosen field with a proper knowledge base, from environmental awareness to health and safety standards.
- Student Organization: UW-Whitewater Student Safety Organization provides an opportunity for students to network, build leadership skills and attend conferences or events.
