ASL 141 BEGINNING AMERICAN SIGN LANGUAGE I 4 Units
This course focuses on the acquisition of American Sign Language (ASL) conversational skills. Students will learn conversational language and visual gestural strategies to promote ASL fluency. Grammatical principles and functions are emphasized, as well as appropriate cultural behaviors and conversational regulators in ASL. Students are also introduced to Deaf history and culture.
ASL 142 BEGINNING AMERICAN SIGN LANGUAGE II 4 Units
This course focuses on the acquisition of American Sign Language (ASL) conversational skills and builds on the foundation laid in ASL 141. Students will continue to learn conversational language and visual gestural strategies to promote ASL fluency. Grammatical principles and functions; appropriate cultural behaviors and conversational regulators; and Deaf history and culture are emphasized.
PREREQ: GRADE OF C OR BETTER IN ASL 141 OR CONSENT OF INSTRUCTOR
ASL 251 INTERMEDIATE AMERICAN SIGN LANGUAGE I 4 Units
This course focuses on the development of proficiency of American Sign Language (ASL) at the intermediate level. Students will learn conversational language and visual gestural strategies to develop further ASL fluency. Grammatical principles and functions are emphasized, as well as appropriate cultural behaviors and conversational regulators in ASL. Students continue developing their knowledge of Deaf history and culture.
PREREQ: C OR BETTER IN ASL 142 OR CONSENT OF INSTRUCTOR
ASL 296 SPECIAL STUDIES Repeatable 1-5 Units
Variable topics. Group activity. Not offered regularly in the curriculum but offered on topics selected on the basis of timeliness, need, and interest, and generally in the format of regularly scheduled Catalog offerings. Repeatable only with change of topic.
ASL 498 INDEPENDENT STUDY Repeatable 1-3 Units
Study of a selected topic or topics under the direction of a faculty member. Repeatable.
