MUS 101 BEGINNING PIANO 2 Units
A study of basic piano technique toward skill in playing five-finger patterns and triads in all major and minor keys, chord progressions in all major keys, major and harmonic minor scales, basic transposition, legato and staccato touch and responsiveness to phrasing.
MUS 102 BEGINNING PIANO 2 Units
A study of basic piano technique toward skill in playing five-finger patterns and triads in all major and minor keys, chord progressions in all major keys, major and harmonic minor scales, basic transposition, legato and staccato touch and responsiveness to phrasing.
MUS 103 ELEMENTARY PIANO 2 Units
A continuation of skills learned in MUS 102, including dexterity playing major and harmonic minor scales and arpeggios, harmonization of a given melody with block chord accompaniment, playing various rhythms including syncopation in simple, compound and asymmetric meters, and reading and playing two parts including alto or tenor clef.
PREREQ: MUS 102 OR INSTRUCTOR CONSENT
MUS 105 ELEMENTARY PIANO 2 Units

MUS 119 CAREERS IN MUSIC AND THE ARTS 3 Units
Students will learn about careers in music and the arts, and develop career skills for the music and arts industries that include resume and biography writing, interviewing, networking, and building an online presence. Throughout the course students will learn from professionals in arts fields through guest lectures, develop the idea of brand identity, and will practice applying and interviewing for employment in the music and arts industries.
MUS 129 TIKTOK, YOUTUBE, AND INSTAGRAM - INTRODUCTION TO DIGITAL MEDIA 3 Units
Have you ever wanted to create digital content for online platforms? In this course, you will learn to create audio and video content for personal and public use. You will learn the history of digital media and its uses. You will use this foundation to create digital media strategies and to develop media for presentation on current digital media platforms.
MUS 139 GAGA, DRAKE, AND SHEERAN: CONTEMPORARY POPULAR MUSIC STUDIES 3 Units
This course focuses on a host of current popular music artists and will pursue the understanding of their work in musical terms with discussion pertaining to their careers, their celebrity, and fan and internet culture, comparing their music with others who have achieved memorable status.
MUS 170 FUNDAMENTALS OF MUSIC 3 Units
A beginning course in music theory for interested students. The course content includes basic concepts of notation, pitch, rhythm, scales, and chords. Beginning listening and music reading skills are taught. Credits not applicable to music major or minor.
MUS 171 MUSIC THEORY I 3 Units
A detailed study of the development of Western music's structural techniques and basic compositional components through the study and analysis of harmony and an introduction to counterpoint. Notation, rhythm, major and minor keys, modes, root position triads, inverted chords, non-harmonic tones and an introduction to part writing will be studied. Includes keyboard work to examine, explore and understand the materials studied. Open to all students with consent of instructor. Required of students planning a music major or minor. Music majors and minors must enroll concurrently in MUS 181 to meet aural skills requirement.
MUS 172 MUSIC THEORY II 3 Units
Continuation of MUS 171. Melodic harmonization, voice-leading, harmonic & rhythmic progression, dominant seventh & leading-tone seventh chords, non-dominant seventh chords, Intro to modulation, secondary dominant & leading-tone chords, Intro to two & three-part forms & counterpoint will be studied. Required of students planning a music major or minor. Music majors & minors must enroll concurrently in MUS 182 to meet aural skills requirements.

A guide to the understanding of music through listening experiences in the various styles and historical periods, including but not limited to Greek and Roman music through the music of Ludwig van Beethoven.

MUS 265 MUSIC IN THE UNITED STATES 3 Units
An introduction to music in the United States, with an emphasis on ways in which music has reflected and shaped the cultural lives and social institutions of various ethnic and racial groups. Includes study of music from pre-United States cultures, the synthesis of music from said cultures, and also styles uniquely American such as jazz, rock, and American pop music.
MUS 273 JAZZ HISTORY AND APPRECIATION 3 Units
An introduction to the styles and forms of jazz through a study of its history, literature, cultural influences, musical structure, and prominent performers. Includes recorded listening experiences.
