SECNDED 340 INQUIRY IN BROADFIELD SOCIAL STUDIES 3 Units
This course focuses on how to teach major disciplinary strands within Social Studies, explores the standards, by grade band, for each social science discipline, and integrates the major topics and questions of inquiry addressed by each discipline. In addition, it will prepare students to consider the interdisciplinary nature of Social Studies.

Methods and curriculum for teaching social studies in the middle school. Planning, teaching and assessing of students' learning of social studies education, emphasizing the value of using effective and diverse teaching strategies and meaningful learning activities appropriate for the upper elementary and middle grades.

SECNDED 423 MIDDLE/SECONDARY SCHOOL ART EDUCATION 3 Units
A preparatory course toward teaching art in middle/secondary school. The place of art in the middle/high school program, use and organization of art materials, exhibits and community relations. Required of all broadfield art education majors.

SECNDED 425 TEACHING OF SOCIAL STUDIES 3 Units
This course is designed to prepare students to teach social studies subjects (e.g. history, geography, economics, government), with a focus on grades 4-8. Educators are responsible for creating classroom environments that provide students with opportunities to explore complex, dynamic interdisciplinary issues concerning social studies. The goal for this semester is to learn to create such a classroom by embracing new ways of knowing and understanding the teaching of social studies, our pluralistic society, and our roles as educators.

SECNDED 426 METHODS OF TEACHING ENGLISH AND LANGUAGE ARTS 3 Units
Engages the students in shaping viable perspective for teaching English in todays middle/secondary school; in planning, developing, and evaluating a course, a unit, and a lesson series; in considering and practicing several modes of instruction-learning; in individualizing learning for particular adolescents; and in preparing generally for the Teaching Practicum.

An introduction to the principles and techniques of teaching modern world languages designed to prepare students for the Teaching Practicum. Emphasis is placed on a communicative approach to lesson planning, classroom instruction and proficiency assessment in accordance with the WI Academic Standards.

This course is designed to support the development of basic educational techniques characteristic of secondary science programs. The course will make space for students to learn about developing science curricula, pedagogical practices they find useful, their responsibilities to learners, productive ways to interact with the broader science education community, and gain a broad vision for their teaching profession.

SECNDED 434 TEACHING THEATRE IN THE SECONDARY SCHOOL 3 Units
Techniques of teaching drama, including discussions of the place of theatre in the high school program. The methods and materials appropriate to classroom instruction and the procedures for planning and directing high school dramatic productions will be covered.

This course examines the methods of teaching accounting and personal finance content using research-based strategies. Students will be introduced to theory-based principles and techniques of teaching various learners with an emphasis on lesson planning, classroom instruction, and proficiency assessment.

SECNDED 442 METHODS OF TEACHING COMPUTER APPLICATIONS AND PROGRAMMING 4 Units
This course examines the methods of teaching computer-based courses through the study of keyboarding development, curriculum for keyboarding from early elementary grades through high schools, curriculum and instructional techniques for programming, procedures and standards of assessment, computer applications including Microsoft Word, Excel, Access, and PowerPoint, web development and various emerging technologies. In addition, the course includes a weekly seminar that provides opportunities for students to develop skills in analyzing, describing, and evaluating their own teaching performance.

SECNDED 460 SECONDARY FIELD STUDY SEMINAR 3 Units
Designed to support students in field study during the Secondary Methods Block with opportunities for focused reflection, discussion, and close supervision of preparation for performance assessment tasks. Offered on a satisfactory/no credit basis only.

SECNDED 466 LITERACY IN THE DISCIPLINES 3 Units
Students will develop an understanding of the role of literacy within and across the disciplines. They will design secondary classroom literacy materials according to a theoretical framework of how learners use multiple literacies, with emphasis on the application of skills within the disciplines in order to maximize student learning.
