For students who have had no previous training in the language. Emphasis on reading, writing, listening, and speaking in Spanish. Classes also may include cultural studies of Spain and Latin America. Field trip may be required.
SPA 102 SECOND SEMESTER SPANISH 4 Units
Continuation of SPA 101. Field trip may be required.

SPA 201 THIRD SEMESTER SPANISH 4 Units
Reviews grammar taught during first two semester while adding new material with some stress on idiomatic usage. All four skills (reading, writing, listening, and speaking) are practiced, and continued emphasis is placed on acquisition of cultural knowledge. Field trip may be required.

SPA 202 FOURTH SEMESTER SPANISH 4 Units
Continuation of SPA 201 or SPA 204. Reading, writing, audio/oral practice, cultural insights based on literary texts in Spanish. Field trip may be required.

SPA 219 SPANISH FOR BUSINESS 3 Units
Designed to acquaint the student with the vocabulary & practices of the business community. Oral & written practice in the preparation of letters & forms. Carries no retroactive credit for work completed in high school.

SPA 220 SPANISH FOR THE HEALTHCARE PROFESSIONS 3 Units
The course is designed for non-native speakers of the Spanish language who are majoring in the health professions, such as physicians, physician assistants, nurse practitioners, nurses, dentists, pharmacists, social workers, physical therapists, health educators, nutritionists, etc. The primary purposes are to build a foundation of basic, spoken Spanish and listening comprehension skills emphasizing medical terminology, and to explore Latinx culture in the U.S.. The class will allow students to appreciate how personal attitudes and beliefs affect the client/healthcare provider.
SPA 223 SPANISH IN THE WORKPLACE 3 Units
This course will offer an introduction to Spanish for the workplace with a focus on basic and intermediate grammar as well as context-specific vocabulary to facilitate basic communication with employees or clients whose native language is Spanish. Emphasis is placed on oral communication in professional contexts and will build vocabulary around industries such as customer service, hospitality, business, healthcare, and the legal system.
SPA 225 CONVERSATION AND COMPOSITION 3 Units
Development of written and oral proficiency through systematic exposure to modern cultural developments as found in a variety of contemporary texts. Discussion and composition exercises deal with cultural topics Introduced by original authors.

SPA 227 SPANISH FOR SPANISH SPEAKERS 3 Units
This course emphasizes the development of Spanish-speaking students' ability to use Spanish in a variety of contexts, with a focus on formal speaking and writing. Students will engage in a formal study of the language including appropriate spelling (including the use of accents), development of a more sophisticated vocabulary, verb morphology, syntax and other linguistic topics. Students will study the linguistic and cultural history of the language and the people who speak it in the U.S. and in other countries where Spanish is spoken. Course is taught exclusively in Spanish, and is reserved for Spanish heritage speakers.

SPA 236 THE CULTURE AND CIVILIZATION OF LATIN AMERICA 3 Units
Lectures and readings in English on the art, music, architecture, history, and politics, as well as the social and economic problems of Latin-American countries from pre-Columbian times to the present. Latin Americans in the U.S. and their relationship with Latin America will be examined. No knowledge of Spanish required. No foreign language credit.
