THEATRE 100   THEATRE APPRECIATION   2 Units

Designed to provide non-theatre majors with a background in theatre which will enrich their theatrical experiences and provide them with a basis for evaluating theatre productions. Fulfills General Studies requirements but does not apply toward major or minor in the department. Offered each fall*.

THEATRE 110   INTRODUCTION TO THEATRE   4 Units

An exploration of the fundamental theories and practices of theatre art, including performance, design, and stage management. An introduction to theatre history will provide social and cultural context. Forty hours of lab participation in technical theatre (primarily stagecraft and costuming) are required.

THEATRE 120   INTRODUCTION TO ACTING   3 Units

A study of basic principles and techniques of acting, including physical and vocal control and basic approaches to characterization.

THEATRE 200   THEATRE ACTIVITIES PRACTICUM   Repeatable   1-2 Units

Activities practicum for non-theatre majors and minors engaged in Theatre/Dance Department production activities not covered by other listed practicums, such as performing in the orchestra for musicals and operas. May also be used as a 1 unit lab credit to bring THEATRE 100 in line with THEATRE 110 for those students who took THEATRE 100 before declaring a Theatre major. By contacting the Theatre/Dance Department via phone or email and requesting consent to enroll, after discussion regarding student interests and production openings enrollees will be placed into a production task such as scenic/costume construction or backstage crew.

THEATRE 201   PRACTICUM - ACTING   Repeatable   0.5-3 Units

Participation as an actor/performer in a supporting or minor role in a University Theatre production. Students cast in a production will contribute production hours in costume and scenery construction. In general, 25 hours of performance participation is expected per 0.5 unit, with 50 hours participation expected per 1 unit.

THEATRE 202   PRACTICUM - ASSISTANT DIRECTING   Repeatable   0.5-3 Units

Participation as an Assistant Director on a University Theatre Department-approved production. In general, 25 hours of performance participation is expected per 0.5 unit, with 50 hours participation per 1 unit.

THEATRE 203   PRACTICUM - SOUND   Repeatable   0.5-3 Units

Participation in University Theatre Department productions as Sound Operator, Sound Engineer, or Assistant Sound Designer. In general, 25 40 hours of performance participation is expected per 0.5 unit, with 50 hours participation per 1 unit. Required presence at all technical rehearsals and performances.

THEATRE 204   PRACTICUM - STAGECRAFT   Repeatable   0.5-3 Units

Participation in set construction, painting, and other technical activities on University Theatre/Dance Department productions, as well as Assistant Technical Director. Department approval is required. In general, 25 hours of performance participation is expected per 0.5 unit, with 50 hours participation per 1 unit.

THEATRE 205   PRACTICUM - LIGHTING   Repeatable   0.5-3 Units

Participation as Light Board Operator, Projections Operator, Followspot Operator, Assistant Head Electrician, or other lighting related technical position on a University Theatre/Dance Department production. Operators are required to be present at all technical rehearsals and performances. In general, 25 hours of performance participation is expected per 0.5 unit, with 50 hours participation expected per 1 unit.

THEATRE 206   PRACTICUM - COSTUMES   Repeatable   0.5-3 Units

Participation in the construction of costumes or wardrobe crew for University Theatre/Dance Department productions. Department approval is required. In general, 25 hours of performance participation is required per 0.5 unit, with 50 hours expected per 1 unit. Wardrobe crew is required to be present for all dress rehearsals and performances.

THEATRE 207   PRACTICUM - ASSISTANT SCENIC DESIGNER   Repeatable   0.5-3 Units

Participation as Assistant Scenic Designer for University Theatre/Dance productions. In general, 25 hours or performance participation is expected per 0.5 unit, with 50 hours participation expected per 1 unit. Assistant Scenic Designers are required to attend all production meetings and all technical rehearsals.

THEATRE 208   PRACTICUM - ASSISTANT STAGE MANAGER   Repeatable   0.5-3 Units

Participation as Assistant Stage Manager for University Theatre/Dance Department productions. Assistant Stage Managers are expected to be present for auditions, all rehearsals, technical rehearsals, and performances. In general, 25 hours of performance participation is expected per 0.5 unit, with 50 hours participation expected per 1 unit.

THEATRE 209   PRACTICUM - PROPERTIES   Repeatable   0.5-3 Units

Participation as Properties Crew, Assistant Properties Artisan, Assistant Properties Manager, or Assistant Properties Designer for University Theatre/Dance Department productions. Attendance at all production meetings and technical rehearsals is required for some of these roles. In general, 25 hours of performance participation is expected per 0.5 units, with 50 hour participation expected per 1 unit.

THEATRE 210   PRACTICUM - MAKEUP/HAIR   Repeatable   0.5-3 Units

Participation as Makeup and/or Hair crew for University Theatre/Dance department production. Participants are required to be present for all technical rehearsals and performances. In general, 25 hours of performance participation is expected per 0.5 unit, with 50 hours participation expected per 1 unit.

Participation as assistant dramaturg or research assistant for University Theatre/Dance department productions. In general, 25 hours of performance participation is required per 0.5 unit, with 50 hours participation expected per 1 unit.

THEATRE 212   PRACTICUM - FRONT OF HOUSE OPERATIONS   Repeatable   0.5-3 Units

Participation in Front of House operations for University Theatre/Dance department productions. May include (but is not limited to) Assistant House Manager, Publicity and Marketing Assistant, Outreach and Development Assistant. In general, 25 hours performance participation is expected per 0.5 unit, with 50 hours participation expected per 1 unit.

THEATRE 213   PRACTICUM - ASSISTANT COSTUME DESIGNER   Repeatable   0.5-3 Units

Participation as Assistant Costume Designer for University Theatre/Dance department productions. Students are expected to attend production meetings and technical rehearsal, as well as attend to other design responsibilities as assigned. In general, 25 hours of performance participation is expected per 0.5 unit, with 50 hours participation expected per 1 unit.

THEATRE 214   PRACTICUM - ASSISTANT LIGHTING DESIGNER   Repeatable   0.5-3 Units

Participation as Assistant Lighting Designer for University Theatre/Dance department productions. Students are expected to attend all production meetings and technical rehearsals as well as attend to other design responsibilities as assigned. THEATRE 216   PRACTICUM - SCENIC PAINTING   Repeatable   0.5-3 Units

Student participation on a University Theatre/Dance production as a scenic artist/painter. Works with the scenic designer and technical director on implementing paint work for the scenic design. In general, 25 hours are expected per 0.5 units, with 50 hours participation expected per 1 unit.

THEATRE 217   PRACTICUM - ASSISTANT MAKEUP/HAIR DESIGNER   Repeatable   0.5-3 Units

Participation as Assistant Makeup and/or Hair Designer for University Theatre/Dance department productions. Student is expected to attend production meetings and dress rehearsals, as well as complete other design duties as assigned. In general, 25 hours of performance participation is expected per 0.5 unit, with 50 hours participation expected per 1 unit.

THEATRE 219   AUDITIONING   Repeatable   3 Units

This course offers training in resume preparation, in preparing for an audition, and in presenting audition material.

THEATRE 220   ACTING: ANALYSIS AND PERFORMANCE   3 Units

A study of techniques of character analysis and development which seeks to explore and integrate the internal and external aspects of acting in order to develop a dynamic approach to the actor's craft.

THEATRE 225   SCRIPT ANALYSIS   3 Units

A study of the basic elements of drama and how these elements combine to create a play. Particular emphasis will be placed on how to discover a valid interpretation of the playwright's intentions and transfer that interpretation to the stage. Required for all Theatre majors.

THEATRE 230   MOVEMENT FOR THE ACTOR   Repeatable   3 Units

Movement for the Actor is a course designed to develop the physical performance ability of acting students. Body alignment will be explored in relation to movement dynamic and the search for a neutral base. A personal physical warm-up will be established for each student. Range of performance energy will be explored as well as the development of character through movement. Repeatable two times for a maximum of 6 credits in major/degree.

Lecture-demonstrations and laboratory experience in the basic theories and techniques relative to the design and application of stage make-up.

THEATRE 251   INTRODUCTION TO TECHNICAL THEATRE   4 Units

Fundamentals of the technical aspects of scenery, costumes, and lighting for theatre and dance. Examination of the mechanical principles and techniques used in scenery, costuming, and lighting, stressing practical "hands-on" experiences. A minimum of 32 hours shop participation is required. THEATRE 252   INTRODUCTION TO THEATRICAL DESIGN   3 Units

An examination of the basic principles of scenic, costume and lighting design for the theatre. Topics covered include the design process, research, elements of design and practical considerations. Studio labs include instruction and practice in sketching, drafting and rendering. Offered each fall*.

THEATRE 260   PRODUCTION STAGE MANAGEMENT   3 Units

Production Stage Management explores the processes of stage and fiscal management for Theatre. The first part of the course covers the various duties and responsibilities of the Stage Manager. The course then explores the processes required by Production Stage Managers to oversee the personnel and fiscal operations during production.

THEATRE 271   THEATRE HISTORY I   3 Units

The primary objective of this course is to study the salient developments of the period defined as primitive/ancient (beginning with pre-agrarian man) to Western Romanticism (early 20th Century). The course will focus on the innovations and philosophies of historical, theatrical style periods as a chronological and thematic approach.

THEATRE 272   THEATRE HISTORY II   3 Units

This course is a continuation of Theatre History One. The primary objective of this course is to study the salient developments of the period defined as Realism (beginning with late 19th Century) to Post Modernism and Trans Modernism (21st Century). The course will focus on the innovations and philosophies of historical style periods as a chronological thematic approach.

THEATRE 301   ADVANCED PRACTICUM - ACTING   Repeatable   0.5-3 Units

Participation as an actor/performer in a leading or major role in a University Theatre/Dance Department production. Students will also be assigned a limited number of production hours in costume and scenery construction. In general, 50 hours participation expected per 1 unit. Student must audition for and be cast in a department production.

THEATRE 303   ADVANCED PRACTICUM - SOUND DESIGN   Repeatable   0.5-3 Units

Participation as Sound Designer for University Theatre/Dance productions. Responsibilities include but are not limited to attendance at all production meetings, research, rehearsal observation, design paperwork and drawings, sound effect creation, playback system set up, attendance at all technical rehearsals. In general, 50 hours of performance participation are required per 1 unit.

THEATRE 304   ADVANCED PRACTICUM - TECHNICAL DIRECTION   Repeatable   0.5-3 Units

Participation as Technical Director (under faculty supervision) for a University Theatre/Dance department production. Activities include, but is not limited to, attendance at all production meetings, designer consultations, technical rehearsals, and strike, as well as preparation of construction paperwork and research, as well as supervision of shop activities during construction process. In general, 50 hours participation is expected per 1 unit.

THEATRE 305   ADVANCED PRACTICUM - LIGHTING DESIGN/ELECTRICS   Repeatable   0.5-3 Units

Participation a Lighting Designer or Head Electrician on a University Theatre/Dance department production. For designers this includes, but is not limited to, attendance at all production meetings and technical rehearsals, as well rehearsal observation and consultation at light hang, focus, and note sessions. Designer will prepare all required drawings and paperwork. Head Electrician duties include, but are not limited to, planning and supervision of light hang, focus, and note sessions in close collaboration with the production's lighting designer. In general, 50 hours of participation are expected per 1 unit.

THEATRE 306   ADVANCED PRACTICUM - COSTUME DESIGN/TECHNICIAN   Repeatable   0.5-3 Units

Participation as Costume Designer or Lead Shop Technician for a University Theatre/Dance department production. For designers duties include, but are not limited to, attendance at all production meetings, director consultations, and technical rehearsals; completion of all design research and paperwork; supervising the design as it moves through the shop. Lead Shop Technician duties include, but are not limited to, consultation with the costume designer, completion of all construction research and paperwork, and supervision of the costume shop activities in the implementation of the design. In general, 50 hours of participation are expected per 1 unit.

THEATRE 307   ADVANCED PRACTICUM - SCENIC DESIGN   Repeatable   0.5-3 Units

Participation as Scenic Designer or Projection Designer for a University Theatre/Dance department production. Activities include, but are not limited to, attendance at all production meetings, director consultations, and technical rehearsals; research and creation of required paperwork and drawing; consultation with scene shop in implementation of the design. In general, 50 hours of participation are expected per 1 unit.

Participation as Makeup and/or Hair Designer for University Theatre/Dance department production. Includes but is not limited to all production meetings, research, rehearsal observation, design paperwork and drawings, implementation consultation, and technical rehearsals associated with the production. Participation as Dramaturg for a University Theatre/Dance department production. Includes but is not limited to script analysis and research, production meeting and rehearsal attendance, and generation of materials for use in rehearsal and publicity. THEATRE 316   Design II for Theatrical Scenery and Lighting   3 Units

Building on the design foundations introduced in Introduction to Theatrical Design, this course will further develop the specific graphic communication skills, including drafting and related computer programs, required to express theatrical design principles in the realization of successful performance environments.

THEATRE 320   ACTING: PROBLEMS OF STYLE   3 Units

Theories and techniques of character analysis and of acting in several theatrical periods, e.g., Classical, Elizabethan and Restoration.

THEATRE 325   IMPROVISATIONAL DRAMA   3 Units

A study of the techniques of non-scripted drama, including theatre games, improvised scenes, creative drama and story dramatization. Implications and uses of non-scripted drama for education and performance are explored through lectures, demonstrations and group participation.

THEATRE 328   VOCAL PRODUCTION AND STAGE SPEECH   Repeatable   3 Units

A study of vocal production and vocal techniques for the actor. Emphasis on the fundamentals of freeing the actor's voice: breathing, relaxation, resonance, articulation, variety and projection. Repeatable two times for a maximum of 6 units in major/degree.

Study and application of techniques useful in selection, interpretation and staging the play in a proscenium setting.

A lecture/laboratory course to study and practice the basic principles and process of theatrical costuming, including the fundamentals of pattern making, textiles and costume construction. Construction of a costume is required.

Study of the clothing and costume accessories of the major historic periods, with an emphasis on western costume history.

Advanced study and practice of the principles of scenery construction, scene painting, technical drafting, planning and budgeting. A minimum of 50 hours of participation is required.

THEATRE 355   PERIOD DECOR AND ARCHITECTURAL STYLES   3 Units

A survey of architectural and interior decorative styles from the ancient world to contemporary North America, including their cultural contexts as well as their salient features. For students interested in recognizing and identifying the human-made artifacts of the world around them, and understanding why buildings, furniture, and household appliances look the way they do. This course is of particular use for students exploring design fields that require broad knowledge of decorative styles.

THEATRE 363   APPLIED STUDIES IN ARTS MARKETING   2 Units

A study of the duties and skills of marketing managers of both commercial and non-profit arts-related businesses, as well as the individual artist in the marketplace. Topics include marketing research, planning a marketing budget, promotions, media relations, advertising, corporate and media sponsorship, and audience development. THEATRE 365   NON-PROFIT ARTS MANAGEMENT   3 Units

Foundational course of the Arts Management Program. A study of the duties and required skills of managers of non- profit arts organizations. Areas of study include an overview of structure of arts organizations, planning, programming, staffing, budgeting, and marketing, fundraising, board development, and volunteer management. Offered fall and spring.

THEATRE 366   PERFORMING ARTS OPERATIONS AND MANAGEMENT   3 Units

A study of the duties and required skills of managers of performing arts organizations including house management, facility management, box office management, and strategic planning, as well as an overview of human resource management, patron management systems, and legal procedures. Offered each spring.

THEATRE 369   MULTICULTURAL DRAMA OF THE UNITED STATES   3 Units

The course examines the theatrical forms and the dramatic literature of African-Americans, Asian-Americans, Latinos/as, and Native Americans, and places them in the context of American theatre and U.S. social/political history.

THEATRE 422   ACTING FOR THE CAMERA   3 Units

A course to study and practice basic principles of on-camera performance. Through regular on-camera assignments students learn skills necessary to work as actors in the TV and film industries.

THEATRE 433   DIRECTING II   3 Units

The study and application of contemporary directing theories and an exploration of approaches to production styles; includes the direction of a 30-40 minute studio production.

THEATRE 460   ADVANCED STAGE DESIGN AND TECHNOLOGY   Repeatable   3 Units

A course for the advanced student who wishes to pursue further study in scenic, costume or lighting design and/or technology. Each student, in consultation with the instructors, will choose 2 projects on which to focus. The lecture/labs will consist of work on those projects and lecture/discussions related to the projects. Required for B.F.A. Design/Tech students. Offered each spring. Repeatable three times for a maximum of 9 credits in major.

A study for which data is gathered from sources broader than the classroom or laboratory, often involving off-campus work study experience in an area which has been selected for exploration, such as summer tours in theatre. Offered on demand. Repeatable.

THEATRE 493   INTERNSHIP IN THEATRE PRACTICE   Repeatable   1-12 Units

In cooperation with a designated theatrical organization and with previously established guidelines, participation in the production and/or management activities of a commercial or non-profit theatre operation.
