ESL License Only

Those pursuing the ESL license only must demonstrate experience learning a language other than English. A variety of options to meet this requirement exist.

Bilingual-Bicultural and ESL Licenses

  1. Those pursuing the bilingual-bicultural license in addition to the ESL license must show language proficiency across four language modalities (speaking, listening, reading, and writing) on an ACTFL-aligned language proficiency assessment (i.e. OPI[c] and WPT). For some less commonly taught languages (e.g. Hmong), approved language proficiency assessment may be shown on oral language only assessment (i.e. OPI[c]) plus another ACTFL-aligned proficiency assessment (e.g. AVANT STAMP), as available. When language proficiency in reading and writing is not appropriate, oral language proficiency will be required and reading/writing proficiency assessments will be waived. When language proficiency in reading and writing is appropriate but not available through an ACTFL-aligned assessment, reading and writing proficiencies may be requested to be included in a content portfolio.
  2. Those pursuing the bilingual-bicultural in Spanish must take a 3 units course in Chicanx/Latinx Studies (a course with the CHICANO or LATINX prefix). Those pursuing the bilingual-bicultural license in a language other than Spanish must take a 3 units course in Race and Ethnic Studies (a course with the RACEETH prefix).
