The Curriculum and Instruction Department provides several undergraduate teacher licensure programs and a minor in ESL/Bilingual Education.

The Early Childhood Education major is a dual licensure program that qualifies students for a Bachelor of Science in Education degree and endorsement for Wisconsin teaching licensure in regular and special education, working with children birth through third grade. This major is available through two cohort based delivery models: on-campus and online hybrid (for students with their AAS degree in early childhood education). Course content is blended with a strong emphasis on application through a variety of field opportunities.

The Early Child Care and Education (ECCE) - Leadership Emphasis Non-Licensure is designed for those already in or wanting to assume a leadership role in the early childhood profession, including but not limited to child care program directors and administrators as well as individuals working for early childhood focused organizations. This is a degree-completion program. See specific admission requirements.

The Early Child Care and Education (ECCE) - Teaching Emphasis Non-Licensure is designed for those already teaching children from birth through 12 years old in family child care, group child care, head start and school-age programs. This is a degree-completion program. See specific admission requirements.

The Elementary Education - Middle Childhood/Early Adolescence major leads to licensure for teaching children ages about 6 to about 12/13 or the elementary and middle grades. The program includes elementary education major, a minor, and a wide range of Professional Education courses. Special emphasis is placed on fieldwork in schools and developing the skills to work with children who may vary widely in background and educational need. A special methods course in the minor may be required.

Secondary Education prepares students to teach in middle or junior high schools and senior high schools. Academic major(s), minor(s), or broadfield areas are complemented by educational foundations coursework, methods courses, and field work that qualify students for middle/secondary teaching licensure. For Secondary Education majors to be certified in their minor as well as their major, they must have a methods course in the minor.

The Bachelor of Science in Education with an Elementary/Middle Education or Secondary Education major may be paired with a licensable minor in ESL and/or Bilingual-Bicultural Education. The minor provides undergraduate/graduate students with a socio-political grounding in Bilingual and ESL education along with an understanding of second language acquisition, academic language, instructional strategies, and cultural awareness needed to work with K-12 multilingual  learners whose home language is not English.

In addition to the programs offered through the department, the department supports grades K-12 area majors in several fields. Broad area majors are as follows:

  • Art Education: The major in art education is outlined under Art.

Majors in Curriculum and Instruction

Secondary Education Majors (6-12)

Secondary Education programs prepare students to teach specific subjects in grades 6-12. Students in Secondary Education complete an Education major in one of the subjects from the list below, plus an approved minor is required:

Subject Specific Licensure Requirements

In addition to the above licensure sequence, which is common to all secondary programs, some subjects require additional coursework beyond the major in order to obtain licensure. Refer to the course descriptions in each department for details. Note that the Academic Advising Report (AAR) lists the specific licensure requirements for only one subject. Students seeking licensure in more than one subject are responsible for all requirements listed under licensure in each of the subjects whether they appear on the AAR or not. Refer to particular departments for details.
