Music - Choral Education Emphasis Requirements (BM)

The Music Education Choral Emphasis is designed to prepare the student for a career of teaching music in grades K-12.  The emphasis in coursework is on elementary general music and choral music instruction, but instrumental music pedagogy is also included to provide students with beginning knowledge about teaching instruments and instrumental ensembles.  This degree leads to licensure in all areas of music teaching: choral, elementary general, and instrumental music, K-12. Students whose primary performing area is not voice must demonstrate, through audition before the voice faculty, a satisfactory level of vocal ability before being admitted to this program. The outline of courses assumes a primary performing area of either voice or keyboard (piano or organ).  Coursework in elementary general music and instrumental music are included in this degree, per DPI's new umbrella licensure.  Although students in this degree will have an emphasis in choral music, the additional coursework will help them be prepared to begin teaching in an elementary general music or instrumental music position.
