Music - Instrumental Education Emphasis Requirements (BM)
The Music Education Instrumental Emphasis is designed to prepare the student for a career of teaching instrumental music in the public schools (kindergarten through grade 12). The emphasis in coursework is on instrumental music instruction, but choral and general music pedagogy are also included to provide students with beginning knowledge about teaching vocal/choral ensembles and general music. This degree leads to licensure in all areas of music teaching: choral, elementary general, and instrumental music, K-12, per DPI requirement. Students whose primary performing area is not instrumental must demonstrate, through audition before the instrumental faculty, a satisfactory level of playing ability before being admitted to this program. The outline of courses assumes an instrumental primary performing area. Although students in this degree will have an emphasis in instrumental music, the additional choral and general music coursework will help them be prepared to begin teaching in an elementary general music or choral music position.
