ENGLISH 510   LITERATURE FOR ADOLESCENTS   3 Units

This course will explore the history and development of adolescent literature, with special emphasis on the period since 1960. Recent novels which have proven popular and influential with young people and teachers will be analyzed using literary and educational criteria. Participants will consider works within the context of intellectual freedom and potential censorship.

ENGLISH 545   AFRICAN-AMERICAN LITERATURE, 1800 TO PRESENT   3 Units

A survey of essays, prose fiction, drama, and poetry written by African-Americans from the colonial period to the present.

ENGLISH 605   SHAKESPEARE   3 Units

A study of the works of Shakespeare which will include representative genres and which will not duplicate works studied in ENGLISH 604.

ENGLISH 679   CENTRAL CONCEPTS IN COMPOSITION THEORY   3 Units

Writing is a complicated venture that takes various forms depending on purpose, audience, etc. But, there is also a science to how and why writing happens. This course will introduce you to foundational and current theories of composition/writing to enhance your writing abilities and, if you are an educator, enhance your ability to teach writing.

ENGLISH 680   FOUNDATIONS OF ENGLISH COMPOSITION   3 Units

This course will cover various methods of developing and organizing composition curriculum, including concepts of design and assignment types. Successful completion of the course will help you to: (1) Understand the field of composition studies, (2) Understand and apply practices for effective writing, (3) Hone your writing skills, (4) Hone your teaching skills, and (5) Design learning activities and course documents that scaffold writing instruction.

ENGLISH 705   CENTRAL CONCEPTS IN LITERARY THEORY   3 Units

Central Concepts in Literary Theory addresses strategies that encourage students' critical engagement with literary texts. Using close reading as the foundation for literary analysis, the course introduces general ideas from the major theoretical schools that consider aesthetics, race, class, gender, and history as lenses for interpretation.

ENGLISH 710   CREATIVE WRITING   3 Units

This graduate-level course aims to give you an intensive experience in the reading and writing of creative nonfiction (essays), fiction (short stories) and poetry (poems). You will read essays, stories and poems, and respond to them in writing. Critical analysis of peer writing will be included.

ENGLISH 729   EUROPEAN LITERATURE   3 Units

This course examines competing loyalties in European literature. We read through various genres and European literatures translated to English from Greek, Russian, French, German, Italian, Norwegian, and other languages. To understand and analyze these original works we will adopt both historical and textual approaches. How have the historical circumstances shaped the ideological, philosophical, and intellectual concerns of European writers? How did conflicting ideas on the self, on belonging and identity, and on political affiliations emerge in the texts of these writers? What ideological influences stand behind these themes?

ENGLISH 765   MULTICULTURAL LITERATURE OF THE UNITED STATES   3 Units

This course is an introduction to literature written by writers of color living in the United States. With special attention to motifs such as history, marginality, movement, violence, hybridity, linguistic identity, and home/land, the course explores similarities and differences in the writings of diverse Americans. The prisms of gender, class, and sexuality connect to and collide with racialized identities. While realizing the advantages of comparative study, this course samples only select works by American writers.
