ARABIC 141   BEGINNING ARABIC I   4 Units

In this first semester Arabic course, students will begin to learn how to speak, read, and write Arabic in its Modern Standard form (aka MSA). The class will also provide an introduction to the customs and culture of the Arab world.

ARABIC 142   BEGINNING ARABIC II   4 Units

In this second semester Arabic course, students will continue to learn how to speak, read, and write Arabic in its Modern Standard form (aka MSA). The class will also provide an introduction to the customs and culture of the Arab world.

ARABIC 251   INTERMEDIATE ARABIC I   4 Units

This third semester Arabic course will enhance the Arabic linguistic skills and the knowledge of cultures of Arabic-speaking peoples that students acquired in Beginning Arabic.

ARABIC 252   INTERMEDIATE ARABIC II   4 Units

This fourth semester Arabic course will continue to enhance the Arabic linguistic skills and the knowledge of cultures of Arabic-speaking peoples acquired in Intermediate Arabic I.

ARABIC 285   GENDER IN THE MIDDLE EAST THROUGH FILM & LITERATURE   3 Units

This course explores gender issues in the Middle East through texts and films created by authors and filmmakers from the Middle East. The Arabic-Speaking World is a focus of the course, but materials from Turkey, Iran, Pakistan, and others will also be explored. The course adopts an interdisciplinary approach. Besides primary sources, course materials include historical, critical and theoretical readings that bolster a deeper understanding of the specific issue or area under scrutiny. Agency, social and religious reform, masculinity, representation, citizenship, displacement, and nationalism are among the issues the course explores.

Internships are available in business, government or social service agencies for suitably prepared students wishing to pursue a career that involves foreign languages. Repeatable. Satisfactory/No Credit Grade Basis Only.

ARABIC 494   SEMINAR   Repeatable   1-3 Units

Variable topics. Group activity. An advanced course of study in a defined subject matter area emphasizing a small group in intense study with a faculty member. Repeatable one time.

ARABIC 496   SPECIAL STUDIES   Repeatable   1-3 Units

Variable topics. Group activity. Not offered regularly in the curriculum but offered on topics selected on the basis of timeliness, need, and interest, and generally in the format of regularly scheduled Catalog offerings. Repeatable.
