SPA 100   Spanish Language through Culture   3 Units

An Intro to the Spanish language that focuses as much on the cultural aspects of the language as on the language itself. Students can expect to learn basic elements of vocabulary & structure while learning about the people who speak the language in the US & around the world.

SPA 101   First Semester Spanish   4 Units

For students who have had no previous training in the language. Emphasis on reading, writing, listening, & speaking in Spanish. Classes also may include cultural studies of Spain & Latin America. Field trip may be required.

SPA 102   Second Semester Spanish   4 Units

Continuation of SPA 101 or SPA 104. Field trip may be required.

SPA 103   First Semester Spanish--Part I   2 Units

For students who have had no previous training in the language. This course is the first module of a two-part Introductory sequence. Emphasis on reading, writing, listening, & speaking in Spanish. Classes may include cultural studies of Spain & Latin America. Field trip may be required. (This course in combination with SPA 104 is equivalent to SPA 101).

SPA 104   First Semester Spanish--Part II   2 Units

Continuation of SPA 103 & second module of a two-part Introductory sequence. Field trip may be required. (This course in combination with SPA 103 is equivalent to SPA 101.)

SPA 105   Second Semester Spanish   4 Units

SPA 118   Practical Spoken Spanish   1-4 Units

Emphasis on the spoken language in everyday contexts. Not part of the sequence of required foreign language courses. May be taken more than once for credit if content changes.

SPA 201   Third Semester Spanish   4 Units

SPA 220   Spanish for the Healthcare Professions   4 Units

The course is designed for Int. students of the Spanish language majoring in the health professions such as physicians, physician assistants, nurse practitioners, nurses, dentists, pharmacists, social workers, physical therapists, health educators, Nut.ists, etc.. The primary purposes are to improve Spanish language skills with emphasis on medical terminology & to explore Latino culture in the U.S.. The class will allow students to appreciate how personal attitudes & beliefs affect the client/health care provider.

SPA 227   Spanish for Spanish Speakers   3 Units

This course emphasizes the development of Spanish-speaking students? ability to use Spanish in a variety of contexts, with a focus on formal speaking & writing. Students will engage in a formal study of the language including appropriate spelling (including the use of accents), development of a more sophisticated vocabulary, verb morphology, syntax & other linguistic topics. Students will study the linguistic & cultural history of the language & the people who speak it in the U.S. & in other countries where Spanish is spoken. Course is taught exclusively in Spanish.

Lectures & readings in English on the art, music, architecture, politics, Eco., & history of Spain. No knowledge of Spanish required. No foreign language credit.

SPA 236   The Culture and Civilization of Latin America   1-3 Units

Lectures & readings in English on the art, music, architecture, history, & politics, as well as the social & economic problems of Latin-American countries from pre-Columbian times to the present. Latin Americans in the U.S. & their relationship with Latin America will be examined. No knowledge of Spanish required. No foreign language credit.

SPA 237   Latino Literature   3 Units

Lectures & readings in English of novels, plays, & poetry written by Chicano & other Latino authors in the U.S. Focuses on cultural differences & alternatives in order to lead students to question previous stereotypes & to come to a new underst&ing of Latino minorities in this country. No knowledge of Spanish required.

SPA 247   Latin American and Latina Women   3 Units

SPA 247 & GSW 247 are the same course.) This course will examine the lives & literary works of Latin American & Latina women within Latin American society & in the US. Particular attention will be given to the roles assigned to these women by patriarchal cultures & to the stereotypes that have influenced their lives. This course will examine how Latin American & Latina women have resisted race, class & gender oppression. The complex relationships among these factors & ethnicity will be examined through the analysis of a variety of primary texts, films, & scholarly articles. The course will be taught in English.
